CASE STUDY: EVENT PORTRAIT INSTALLATION
Limelight: Museum Workers Appreciation Night — RISD MUSEUM (2026)
CONTEXT
Limelight is a completed portrait installation developed for the RISD Museum as part of Limelight: Museum Workers Appreciation Night (2026). The project centers on museum staff recognition through a live, participatory portrait system embedded within an institutional event, translating institutional presence into immediate photographic exchange.
FRAMEWORK
The installation operates as a temporary studio environment situated within the museum, structured to engage staff as participants in a shared act of representation. The system prioritizes accessibility, visibility, and acknowledgment, creating a space where institutional roles are made visible through portraiture. Image-making functions as both recognition and exchange, linking participation to a tangible photographic outcome.
APPROACH
Portraits are produced on-site using a large format 4×5 camera system with Instax Wide film. Each participant is photographed within a simple, structured setup designed for consistency and ease. Two instant portraits are created per session, with participants selecting and keeping one print. The process is conversational and efficient, emphasizing comfort, presence, and collaboration while operating within the pace of a live event.
FORM
The work exists as a collection of instant portraits and corresponding digital records generated in real time during the event. Each image functions as both an individual portrait and part of a larger visual system shaped by repetition, consistency, and shared context. The installation format emphasizes accumulation within a defined timeframe, producing a cohesive body of work rooted in a single institutional moment.
OUTCOME
Limelight resulted in a series of portraits that foreground museum staff as central contributors to the institution’s cultural ecosystem. The project created a space for recognition and visibility within the structure of a public event, producing a body of work that reflects presence, participation, and institutional identity through direct engagement.
