WORKSHOPS, LECTURES & SALONS

Photography is not just about making images—it is about building systems for how images are made, understood, and shared.

Educational programs, keynotes, and studio salons extend this practice into academic, museum, and institutional settings centered on technical clarity, visual literacy, and shared inquiry.

APPROACH & ENGAGEMENT TYPES

Speaking engagements and educational programs are approached with the same rigor and presence as studio and editorial assignments:

  • Lectures & Keynotes — Structured visual presentations, case studies, and critical conversations exploring the mechanics of perception, theatricality in portraiture, and image-making as a tool for memory and cultural documentation.

  • Critical Salons & Roundtables — Intimate, hosted gatherings centered on print analysis, relational ethics, curatorial inquiry, and peer critique—fostering deep dialogue among artists, curators, and institutional cohorts.

  • Studio Labs & Intensives — Participatory, hands-on environments centered on real-time execution, film processing, lighting systems, and active direction.

  • Virtual Workshops — Interactive, remote learning sessions demystifying light physics, exposure mathematics, and composition.

Sessions range from 60-minute keynotes and hosted salons to multi-day studio intensives and academic residencies. Timing, slide decks, and studio requirements are adapted collaboratively to fit the host institution.

LECTURES, TALKS & salons

CURTAIN CALLING

The Theatrical Nature of Analog Photography · Flagship Lecture & Salon

A visual presentation and theoretical framework deconstructing the structural alignment between live stage performance and analog/instant photography.

  • Focus: The transition from Photographer-as-Editor to Photographer-as-Director; instant film as live performance; irreversible decisions; and the artifact as physical literature.

  • Format: 60–90 minute illustrated presentation followed by a hosted print salon and audience Q&A.

ANALOG ADVANTAGES

Light, Exposure, and the Power of Tangible Artifacts · Illustrated Lecture

A concept-driven breakdown exploring why film-based processes matter in an increasingly digital world.

  • Focus: Obsession with light physics (quantity, quality, direction, color); incident vs. reflective metering; the Sunny 16 framework; and creating physical prints that outlive electronic data.

  • Format: 60–90 minute slide presentation and visual case study.

INSTITUTIONAL RESIDENCIES & COURSES

STREETS + STAGES

Theatrical Modalities, Quantum Observation & The Ethics of the Street · Flagship Residency & Salon Series

A multi-module curriculum framing public space as a pre-existing proscenium—examining how photographers act simultaneously as theatrical directors and quantum observers within socio-industrialized environments.

  • Focus: Representational vs. presentational street photography; the Heisenberg uncertainty principle in public observation; the 5 composition anchors; focal length ethics (28mm to 85mm); and human dignity in documentary work.

  • Format: Keynote lecture, ethics & portfolio salon, and field intensive (half-day, full-day, or multi-week university residency).

STUDIO LABS & HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS

MIRROR, MIRROR

3-Hour Film Portrait Lab · Attention, Light & Relational Exchange

A fast-paced, highly active studio lab structured as a continuous loop of demonstration, observation, and execution—eliminating slide decks to maximize active shooting time.

  • Focus: Light quality and direction in motion; composition and relational psychology ("Present the sternum", expression agreement); timed observation exercises; and live coaching through half-length and in-tight portrait blocks.

  • Format: 3-hour kinetic studio lab (small and medium format film systems).

FIVE AND DIME

Studio Portrait Lab · Film & Lighting Fundamentals

A working studio session focused on artificial lighting, medium-format film systems, and live chemical processing.

  • Focus: Studio lighting (continuous and strobe), exposure metering, subject direction, and hand-processing film on site.

  • Format: Half-day or full-day studio lab.

  • Target Cohort: Intermediate photographers and emerging professionals.

MAGIC MOMENTS

Instant Film Portrait Lab · Tactile Chemistry & Real-Time Presence

A hands-on exploration of the tactile constraints, chemistry, and immediate presence of instant film portraiture.

  • Focus: Instant film behavior, consistent lighting strategies, and subject direction under timing constraints.

  • Format: Technical demonstration followed by active rotating shooting stations.

  • Target Cohort: Creatives, film enthusiasts, and institutional cohorts.

THE IMPORTANCE OF EXPOSURE

Headshot & Identity Lab · Smartphone & Accessible Tools

A practical workshop focused on making expressive, well-lit portraits using accessible smartphone tools.

  • Focus: Subject expression, eye contact, framing, background isolation, and working with natural light.

  • Format: Hands-on shooting, real-time feedback, and guided direction.

  • Target Cohort: Students, early-career professionals, and workforce readiness programs.

VIRTUAL WORKSHOPS

ANALOG ADVENTURES

90-Minute Online Workshop · Light, Exposure Mathematics & Compositional Psychology

A concept-driven virtual workshop built for remote cohorts seeking to ground their practice in core visual fundamentals.

  • Focus: The four pillars of light; exposure triangle mechanics; the Sunny 16 manual framework; and portrait psychology/direction prompts.

  • Format: 90-minute interactive virtual workshop (Zoom / video platform).
