Instances is a mobile, site-specific portrait installation that turns physical photography into a live, interactive ritual. Utilizing vintage medium-format optics, 4x5 large-format view cameras, and instant analog chemistry, subjects step into a deliberate studio environment where a physical portrait develops live on-site in under 60 seconds.

Operating inside the museum's gathering space, the installation served as a central fixture of the evening—delivering physical instant artifacts directly to guests while providing the museum with high-resolution digital archives.

A site-specific mobile studio integrated into the museum’s flagship summer gathering. Set up on the museum grounds, the camera rig captured artists, collectors, and patrons, providing immediate physical keepsakes that connected attendees to the day's creative spirit.

  • The Medium: 4x5 instant analog film, natural light studio.

HOW THE INSTANT STUDIO OPERATES

  • Spatial Footprint: Efficiently scales from a 10x10 ft footprint up to expansive gallery halls, indoor pavilions, and courtyard setups. While capable of operating in compact footprints with standard power access, larger spatial footprints allow for fuller lighting, backdrops, and dramatic guest engagement.

  • The Ritual: Guests step onto the mark, receive active, relational direction, and experience the tactile mechanics of a view-camera exposure.

  • Dual Delivery: The physical print is handed directly to the subject on-site. All instant portraits are digitized on-site in high resolution to provide host institutions with full digital event assets.
